Selling coins

What is the difference between direct sales and auctions?

With direct sales, you sell quickly and discreetly at the current market value.

How does the process of selling coins work step by step?

The value of a currency depends on several factors. Our specialists combine all these elements to arrive at a realistic and competitive valuation. Key factors include:

  1. Rarity
The fewer copies of a coin have been preserved, the higher its potential value. This applies to old coins, but also to modern, low-mintage coins or specific variants.
  2. Quality or state of conservation
A high-quality coin is often worth considerably more than the same type in lower quality. Wear, scratches, traces of cleaning or damage can reduce the value. In addition, grading terms such as Beautiful, Very Fine, or UNC play an important role.
  3. Origin of provenance
Coins with a special origin can be worth more. Think of pieces from well-known collections, finds, museum origins and/or coins with a documented history.
  4. Market demand
The current interest among collectors largely determines what buyers are willing to pay. Sometimes the demand for certain periods, countries or types temporarily increases sharply.
  5. Recent auction results
Current auction prices provide a realistic picture of what collectors have recently paid for comparable coins. We use this information to provide an accurate valuation.
  6. Authenticity and originality
A coin must be completely original.
  7. Metal content and intrinsic value
The weight and content of the precious metal play a role in gold and silver coins. The metal value forms the basis, but the collective value can be much higher for special items.

Do I have to clean my coins before I have them valued?

For direct sales, you will usually receive payment within a few business days.

Can I also sell an entire coin collection?

Yes. Schulman b.v. buys and auctions both loose coins and complete collections.

What is the value of gold or silver coins?

The value depends on both the metal price and the collection value. For many investment coins, the gold or silver price is leading. Collectible value plays a greater role in rarer or historic pieces. Our appraisers always explain to you whether a coin is primarily precious metal in value or whether it has a higher numismatic value.

Can I send my coins from abroad (Europe and worldwide)?

Yes. You can safely send your coins, medals, banknotes or entire collections to us from anywhere in Europe and beyond. We process international submissions daily and are happy to guide you through safe shipping methods.

Can I have my international submission included in an auction?

Can I participate in the auction internationally?

Yes. Our auctions are fully accessible to participants in Europe and worldwide. Thanks to multiple bidding options, you can participate safely and reliably, regardless of your location.

‍Bidding options for international participants:
  1. Live online bidding via our own environment: auctions.schulman.nl. This allows you to follow the auction in real time and make bids immediately.
  2. Written bids submitted by email or through recognised international platforms such as NumisBids and Sixbid; your bids are processed discreetly in advance.
  3. Telephone bidding for higher-value lots (from 1000 euros). You can reserve a telephone line beforehand, after which a staff member will call you during the lot in the auction room.

Is the online auction only for cheaper lots?

No. The online auction has been developed to be able to act quickly and to still include late entries. All lots are treated with the same care, expertise and quality controls as at our classic hall auctions. Due to lower costs, lower-valued lots can also be listed separately, but high-quality items are also regularly auctioned online.

When do the auctions take place?

Schulman organises several auctions per year, often at the Van der Valk Hotel Amsterdam-Amstel and via our online platform. The current agenda can be found on our website.

What does it cost to have my coins auctioned?

We work with a transparent commission rate on the sales price. Inclusion in the catalogue is free of charge for selected lots and there are no hidden costs.

How does live online bidding work?

With a personal account, you can bid live via our website. Registration takes one to two business days and requires a credit card for verification. The card is not charged.

I don't have a computer or a smartphone. How do I bid?

You can still submit your bids in writing, by phone or email, just like in a classic auction.

Why does online bid registration require a credit card?

A credit card is used to verify your identity. This prevents fake accounts and provides safety for both submitters and buyers. The card is not charged and is only used for verification.

I don't have a credit card. Can I still bid live online?

Live bidding via the online platform requires credit card verification. However, without a credit card, you can bid in advance in writing, by phone or email.

I don't have a smartphone. Can I still bid live online?

Yes. You can also bid live via a computer, laptop or tablet via auctions.schulman.nl

Can I bid via Sixbid or Numisbids?

Yes. Our auctions are also offered via Sixbid and Numisbids, so that international collectors can easily bid.

Are my coins insured upon submission?

Yes, your coins are fully insured from the time of return to final sale or return.
When sold via the auction, this takes approximately eight weeks after the auction ends. This gives us sufficient time to process all buyers' payments and to carefully complete the administrative process.
