Selling coinsAn initial assessment is free of charge and entirely without obligation. This applies to single coins as well as complete collections. It tells you what you have and roughly what it is worth. If you would like it set down in writing in an appraisal report, for example for an insurer, for an inventory of an estate, or because you want to know what your own collection is worth, we appraise each coin individually. There are costs attached to that work, and we always discuss them with you beforehand.

No. Never clean your coins yourself. Cleaning can cause irreversible damage to the surface, which can reduce the value drastically. Always leave coins in their original condition. Our experts assess them best exactly as they are, even if that means they carry some dirt or tarnish.
Yes. You can upload photographs and information through our website. A good online appraisal requires sharp images of both sides. You will receive an initial estimate within a few working days. In case of doubt or high values, we recommend an assessment at our office.

You can drop off your coins at our office in Amsterdam by appointment. This ensures that our specialists can take sufficient time for a good assessment. We offer two sales methods: direct sale to us, or sale through our international auctions. Direct sale suits you when you want clarity and payment quickly. Auction sale is ideal for special, rare or high-value pieces, because these attract collectors worldwide. Our specialists are happy to advise which method will produce the best result for your collection.
Direct sale offers speed and certainty. You know where you stand straight away and do not have to wait for an auction. With auction sale your coins are photographed, described and offered to an international audience, with several buyers bidding against one another. Which route suits you best depends on what you have. For common material, where the value sits close to the metal value, an auction rarely adds enough to justify the wait. For rare pieces, exceptional quality or a documented provenance it is the other way round: that is precisely where competition between bidders makes the difference. We handle antique coins, provincial coins and coins of the Kingdom, precious metal coins, commemorative coins, proofs and special varieties, as well as medals, decorations and paper money. Foreign and colonial material too, from Roman denarii to Asian and American issues. What we cannot do anything with is ordinary circulation coinage from recent decades without precious metal content. That has no collector value above its face value, however well preserved it is. If you are unsure, send us a photo and we will tell you straight away.
Yes. We have customers worldwide and regularly offer international material, from Roman denarii to American, Asian and colonial issues. What counts is age, precious metal content and rarity, not the country of origin. Modern foreign circulation coinage without precious metal content therefore falls outside this.

No. The online auction has been developed to be able to act quickly and to still include late entries. All lots are treated with the same care, expertise and quality controls as at our classic hall auctions. Due to lower costs, lower-valued lots can also be listed separately, but high-quality items are also regularly auctioned online.
Yes. All lots can be viewed at our office during the regular viewing days. You will have the opportunity to examine the objects at close range and to put questions to our specialists.
No printed catalogue is produced. You can download the full catalogue as a PDF or print it yourself.
Lots can be collected from our office by appointment. If you have your lots shipped, we combine your purchases wherever possible so that you never pay unnecessary shipping costs. We always ship securely, insured and carefully packed.
You can still submit your bids in writing, by phone or email, just like in a classic auction.
A credit card is used to verify your identity. This prevents fake accounts and provides safety for both submitters and buyers. The card is not charged and is only used for verification.
Live bidding via the online platform requires credit card verification. However, without a credit card, you can bid in advance in writing, by phone or email.

With a direct sale you usually receive payment within a few working days.
With a sale through the auction this takes approximately eight weeks after the auction closes. This gives us sufficient time to process all buyers' payments and to complete the administration carefully.
We ship exclusively by reliable and insured methods. Every shipment is packed sturdily, labelled discreetly and sent fully traceable. Return shipments are insured as well, in accordance with the terms agreed beforehand.
Yes. We always offer fully insured shipping options, both for shipments to us and for return shipments. You are insured for the full value when you use the prescribed shipping method.
Yes. Schulman b.v. ships within the Netherlands and internationally. We prefer an insured shipment via FedEx because of its reliability and fast delivery. The costs for FedEx are 15 euro within the Netherlands and 30 euro for foreign shipments.
For large or heavy packages that have a different size, a special shipping method may be required. In that case, we will inform you in advance about the additional costs and options.
On request, we also ship via PostNL, for example for smaller or less valuable shipments.
