Why sell silver coins with Schulman?

Silver coins often have more value than just their silver content. Think of old Dutch silver guilders and national thalers, commemorative coins or rare foreign pieces of silver. At Schulman, we not only look at the current silver price, but also at the numismatic value, the rarity and condition of the coin. This way, you can be sure that you get a fair and optimal return.

How do I determine the value of my silver coins?
  1. The weight and content of the coin
  2. The current gold price, which determines the base value.
  3. Collective value: rarity, year, origin and condition can increase the value.
  4. The condition of the coin: wear, scratches or damage affect the price.
Is auctioning or selling directly better for silver coins?
That depends on the type of currency.
  1. Rare or high quality pieces, such as provincial thalers or special variants from Willem III, usually reach higher prices in our international auction.
  2. Current and standard silver coins, such as silver tens or precious metal sets, are often more suitable for direct sales.
Our specialists will advise you which method offers the best return and the most care for the collection.
How does it work to register my silver coins?
There are three ways to register:
  1. personally in our gallery in Amsterdam.
  2. During trade fairs where Schulman is present.
  3. Insured shipping by courier (in consultation).
Upon receipt, your coins will be photographed, described and valued. You'll receive an overview of catalogue numbers so you can track your items as they enter the auction.
Can I sell a large collection of silver coins?
Yes. Schulman B.V. specializes in processing extensive collections, including collections with hundreds or thousands of silver pieces. If desired, our experts can schedule a home visit, for example for estates or large collections that require extra care.
What happens to my silver coins if I choose to auction?
Your coins will be:
  1. professionally photographed
  2. carefully described in our luxury printed catalogue
  3. published on the international online auction platform
  4. included in a catalog distributed to collectors worldwide
On the auction day, you can bid in the hall, online or via the app. The proceeds will be paid out no later than eight weeks after the auction.
Can damaged or worn silver coins still be sold?
Yes. Even highly circulated or slightly damaged coins can have value because of their silver content or historical significance. Think of a worn Rijksdaalder 1840 or a muted Spanish 8 Reales. The value in such cases is usually determined by silver weight, but occasionally, despite wear and tear, a coin turns out to be numismatically interesting.
Can I also sell silver tokens or medals?
Yes. In addition to coins, Schulman B.V. also deals with silver medals, guild medals and commemorative medals. For unique or early modern pieces (e.g. from the 17th century), the auction usually offers the best visibility among international collectors.
Do I have to polish my silver coins before I have them valued?
No. Never polish your silver coins prior to a valuation.

Cleaning or polishing coins can cause irreparable damage to the surface, natural patina, and original impact quality. In fact, these factors determine the numismatic value.

Silver coins that have been polished often lose their authentic character and are considered tarnished by collectors. Even slight traces of cleaning can significantly reduce the value.

Therefore, leave your coins always in original condition review. Our experts recognize natural patina, signs of wear and historical consistency and can thus carry out a correct and honest valuation.
How do I know if my silver coin has numismatic value or only silver value?
Numismatic value occurs in coins with special features such as:
  1. rare years
  2. exceptional quality, e.g. scratch-free and sharply beaten (UNC or FDC)
  3. historical origin
  4. variants or tests
When these factors are missing, the value is usually determined by the silver content.
