Selling gold coins

Schulman b.v. is a coin auction house in Amsterdam, founded in 1880. We appraise and sell gold coins, both through direct purchase and through our international auctions, where buyers in 80 countries place bids. Whether a direct sale or an auction gives you the better result comes down to one question: is your coin mainly worth its gold, or mainly rare?

Gold coins for collectors and precious metal investors

Melt value or collector value?

A gold buyer pays on weight and the daily rate. That is the right route for common bullion coins such as Krugerrands, Maple Leafs and Britannias, where the coin is worth no more than the gold in it. With historic and rare coins the collector value is often higher than the gold value. Think of gold ten-guilder pieces with a low mintage, ducats in high grade, or pieces with a notable provenance. At auction those coins come into their own, because we sell to collectors at home and abroad. They pay for rarity, date and grade rather than for weight, which is how the result can run well above the gold price. Not sure which category your coin falls into? We assess this free of charge and indicate which route yields the highest return, including when that is a direct sale.

Value of gold coins

The value of gold coins is not only determined by the gold content and the current gold price, but also by their rarity and numismatic value. For example, many gold tens and gold ducats represent more than just their precious metal value, especially when they are of high quality or come from a special edition. Rare gold coins with a rich history can even exceed their gold price many times in an international auction.

How the sale works

Your coins are examined, weighed and assessed in your presence. On coins whose value equals their gold value we make a direct offer. If a coin has numismatic value, through rarity, date or grade for example, we do not buy it outright but enter it into an auction, because that yields more. For every coin you are told which of the two applies. On sale you identify yourself, as the law requires of precious metal dealers. Payment is made by bank transfer. If you live far away or abroad, you can send your coins to us insured. Unsure whether a coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter and die details under magnification, and have valuable pieces certified by PCGS or NGC.

Where can I safely sell gold coins?

With a party that identifies itself, appraises in your presence and pays by bank transfer. Which party suits you best depends on your coin:
  1. Common bullion coins: a gold buyer is enough, because the value equals the gold price.
  2. Historic or rare coins: choose a coin specialist or auction house, otherwise the collector value is lost.
  3. A complete collection or an estate: have the whole appraised before selling individual pieces.
  4. Not sure: request a free appraisal first, then you will know which category your coin falls into.

What types of gold coins does Schulman, for example, buy or auction?

Among other things, we deal with:
  1. Rare and historic coins with special dates, variants or interesting origins.
  2. Dutch gold coins such as gold tens, ducats and double ducats
  3. Investment coins such as Krugerrand, Maple Leaf and Britannia.
Even if your currency does not come as standard, we are happy to explore the options.

How does Schulman B.V. determine the value of my gold coin?

The value is determined by:
  1. Weight and content of the gold
  2. The current gold price.
  3. Collective value: rarity, popularity, historical significance.
  4. The condition of the coin: undamaged pieces pay more.
For special items, the auction proceeds can be much higher than the gold value.

Can I also sell my coin through an auction?

Yes. Which route it becomes is decided by the coin:
  1. Direct purchase for coins whose value lies in the gold.
  2. Auction consignment for rare or special coins, where the collector value counts.
Auctions can offer higher returns thanks to international bidders and broad promotion.

Can I sell gold coins from abroad?

Yes. We also help international clients.
You can ship your coin insured, bring it in person, or we can advise you on safe transport options.

What is the best way to prepare my coin for sale?

  1. Do not clean, polish or polish. This decreases the value.
  2. Keep the coin safe in a case or capsule.
  3. Collect any certificates or old valuations.
  4. Take clear photos before the first review.
  5. Talk to our experts about which sales method gives the best results.
