Online coin appraisal based on photos.

Would you like a first impression of the value of your coins? At Schulman, you can have coins appraised online via photographs. Based on clear images, our specialists provide a free and non-binding initial appraisal of authenticity, condition and collectible significance.

An online appraisal is suitable for an initial orientation. For rare items, larger collections or when a formal written appraisal is required for insurance or estate purposes, we always recommend a physical inspection.

What to include for an online appraisal

  1. A clear photo of the obverse and reverse, taken straight from above
  2. A detail image of the edge or edge inscription
  3. Weight and diameter, if available
  4. Year, mint and any visible damage or peculiarities
You will receive a clear response with explanation and, where relevant, advice on next steps such as auction consignment, direct sale or retention.

What Is a Coin Appraisal, and Why Does It Matter?

An appraisal provides insight into the market value, origin and condition of your coin or collection. That value is determined by several factors, including rarity, quality, metal content and current demand on the international market.

A silver ducaton, a Dutch gold ten-guilder coin, or an emergency coin each requires different expertise and a different assessment method. Our specialists use historical sources, auction results and modern reference frameworks to arrive at an accurate valuation.

An official appraisal is essential for:
  1. Sell through auction or direct transfer
  2. Distribution within an estate
  3. Insurance or damage assessment
  4. Revaluation of a collection

How Does an Appraisal at Schulman B.V. Work?

A Structured Process with Clear Steps

Step 1 – Inventory

We begin with a personal conversation. Based on photographs or an appointment, we assess the size, background and variety of the material. Larger collections can be brought to our office in Amsterdam, or viewed at your home by appointment.

Step 2 – Authenticity Check

Our specialists examine the design, weight, metal, edge lettering and historical consistency. Only fully verified coins are included in the valuation.

Schulman B.V. applies strict quality standards backed by more than a century of expertise. Every coin assessed by us comes with a lifetime guarantee of authenticity.

Step 3 – Valuation

Value is determined based on:
  1. Rarity within its historical period
  2. Quality (from Very Fine to Uncirculated and Proof)
  3. Current market prices and auction results
  4. Metal content for gold and silver
  5. Provenance or a notable origin

Step 4 – Written Appraisal Report

You receive a clear, well-structured report suitable for:
  1. Sale
  2. Insurance
  3. Estate and inheritance purposes
  4. Internal collection records

Step 5 – Advice and Next Steps

We discuss what comes next together: direct sale, inclusion in an international auction, or archiving your collection. You always remain in full control.

What Determines a Coin's Value?

  1. Rarity
For example, scarce provincial issues, such as West-Friesland or Kampen.
  2. Quality
Coins in Uncirculated or Proof condition often represent substantially higher value.
  3. Historical context
Periods such as the Eighty Years' War, the Kingdom of Holland (1806–1810), or the Kingdom of the Netherlands under William I and William III add cultural significance.
  4. Provenance
A coin with documented origin from a well-known collection, for example the Kempen Hoard, can significantly increase its value.
  5. Metal value
For gold and silver coins, the current spot price plays a role alongside the numismatic value.
