How to buy at Schulman

From registration to delivery in five steps

Step 1 - Register as a bidder

Sign up on our bidding platform or request a paddle number for the auction room. For live online bidding we verify your credit card at registration, which prevents identity fraud and ghost bids. Payment can then be made by invoice.

Step 2 - Study the catalogue

For every auction we publish a printed hardcover catalogue and an online version with all lots. Each lot comes with a photograph, the description, the grade of preservation and the literature reference.

Step 3 - Viewing days in Amsterdam

Before the auction you can inspect the pieces in person in our gallery at Jan Luijkenstraat. Our numismatists go through the lots with you and answer questions about provenance and quality.

Step 4 - Place your bid

Bid live in the auction room, follow the auction online and bid from your screen, or leave a written or telephone bid in advance. Written bids are handled in the order they are received, and an equal bid in the room takes precedence.

Step 5 - Knockdown, payment and delivery

The lot is allocated at the fall of the hammer, with the approval of the notary present. A buyer's premium of 24 percent is added to the hammer price. Once payment is complete we ship your purchase, and collection in Amsterdam can be arranged.

What to know before you bid

Authenticity guaranteed

We guarantee that every piece is genuine unless the catalogue states otherwise. In case of doubt, the ruling of the IBSCC, the authenticity committee of the IAPN, is binding.

Buyer's premium and additional costs

A buyer's premium of 24 percent is added to the hammer price. Shipping and bank charges are for the buyer's account.

Described by numismatists

Every lot states the grade of preservation, the rarity and the literature reference. The description by our numismatists is decisive: if a grading company arrives at a different assessment, that is not a ground for return.

Payment and delivery

Payment is made in euros. The pieces remain our property until the invoice has been paid in full, after which shipping or handover in Amsterdam follows.

Never clean a coin

Polishing damages the surface beyond repair and lowers the value. We do not accept the return of a cleaned or damaged piece.

How does buying coins through the Schulman auctions work?

You can buy coins by bidding live in the auction room, through our online platform, or with a written or telephone bid. Every auction includes coins from different periods, such as Dutch provincial issues, Willem III, gold ten-guilder coins and foreign silver coins. All lots can be viewed in advance in our gallery or in the printed auction catalogue.

How can I assess the quality of a coin?

Every coin is described by our specialists and professionally photographed. The catalogue states the grade of preservation, the rarity and the relevant literature references. During the viewing days you can inspect the lots in person, and our numismatists are available for specialist questions.

What are the additional costs when buying coins?

Does Schulman publish an auction catalogue?

Yes. For every auction we publish a printed hardcover catalogue and an online version with all lots, photos and descriptions. The catalogue is distributed internationally among collectors.

Does Schulman also offer paper money and medals?

Yes. Besides coins, Schulman auctions paper money, historical medals, awards and various numismatic items. The catalogues include full sections with Dutch and international pieces.
