Selling through our international auctions

For rare coins, special varieties and complete collections, selling at auction is usually the most effective method. International bidding often pushes the price above the estimated value. This applies in particular to old coins, provincial coins, VOC coins and thematic collections.

  1. International visibility and competition between collectors
  2. Professional cataloguing with NGC/PCGS certification
  3. Higher results for rare pieces

How does it work?

Sell your coin collection in 3 steps

From first contact to payment: a clear and transparent process.

Step 1 - Contact

Call, email or use our appraisal form. Feel free to include photos for a first assessment. We usually respond within one working day.

Step 2 - Free appraisal

Our numismatic experts assess your coins for rarity, condition, historical significance and metal value. You can visit our office in Amsterdam, but a home visit or fully insured shipping is also possible. You receive a detailed appraisal report with a value range.

Step 3 - Sale or auction

After consultation, you choose a direct sale (paid out immediately) or inclusion in one of our upcoming auctions (usually a higher result). For larger collections we often recommend a combination of both.
Valuation

What determines the value of your coin collection?

The value of a coin collection is determined by several factors. Our specialists weigh all three in the appraisal.

Rarity and mintage

The fewer examples exist, the more valuable a coin usually is. We maintain extensive databases with mintage and rarity figures for Dutch and European coins, complemented by our own auction archive dating back to 1880.

Condition and grading

The condition of a coin has a major influence on its value. We apply international grading standards (from Good to FDC/Proof) and are an authorised dealer for NGC and PCGS. A single grade difference can mean tens of percent in value.

Historical significance

Provenance, historical context and documentation can increase the value considerably. A coin from a well-known collection or with documented provenance is often worth more. Our archive dating back to 1880 is a unique resource for Dutch numismatics.

Frequently asked questions

See all frequently asked questions

What is my coin collection worth?

The value is determined by rarity, condition and current market demand. A free appraisal by our specialists gives you a reliable indication of what your collection is worth.

Is an appraisal free of charge?

Yes, an appraisal at Schulman is free of charge and entirely without obligation. You then decide for yourself whether you want to sell your collection.

How do I sell my collection?

Depending on the nature and composition of the objects, we advise on inclusion in one of our auctions or on a direct sale. In the case of a direct purchase, we make an appropriate offer based on the current market value, with fast and careful settlement.

What is the difference between bullion and numismatics?

Bullion is gold whose value is determined by the weight and purity of the metal. Think of gold bars or modern bullion coins such as the Krugerrand or Maple Leaf.
Numismatics is about coins that derive their value from rarity, historical significance or collector value. A gold ducat or ten guilder piece of Willem III can therefore be worth more than the gold price alone.

What is the best way to sell my coin collection?

That depends on the character of your collection. We take the time to assess your collection thoroughly. For special or rare pieces, inclusion in our auction often proves the most effective approach, thanks to the international interest and extensive presentation. For more common coins, a direct sale based on the current market value can be a suitable solution. In both cases, we provide a clear route, tailored to the contents and value of your collection.

Where can I sell my special coins?

Special coins call for a careful approach. At Schulman b.v. we assess each object for provenance, rarity and quality. Based on that, we advise whether your coin is best placed in one of our international auctions or sold directly. With our long experience, specialist knowledge and worldwide circle of buyers, we ensure a professional presentation and broad reach.

Why is a credit card required when registering for online bidding?

To safeguard the reliability of our auctions, we ask for credit card verification upon registration. This helps prevent identity fraud and unwanted bidding behaviour. The credit card provided is used solely for verification.

Does Schulman also auction banknotes?

Yes. Schulman b.v. regularly organises specialised auctions with a strong focus on paper money. These auctions are announced well in advance and attract interest from the Netherlands and abroad.
