Schulman b.v. is a coin auction house in Amsterdam, founded in 1880. We appraise and sell gold coins, both through direct purchase and through our international auctions, where buyers in 80 countries place bids. Whether a direct sale or an auction gives you the better result comes down to one question: is your coin mainly worth its gold, or mainly rare?

The value of gold coins is not only determined by the gold content and the current gold price, but also by their rarity and numismatic value. For example, many gold tens and gold ducats represent more than just their precious metal value, especially when they are of high quality or come from a special edition. Rare gold coins with a rich history can even exceed their gold price many times in an international auction.

With gold it comes down to one question: is someone buying your coin for the metal, or for the coin itself? For investment coins such as the Krugerrand, the Maple Leaf and the Britannia the answer is the metal. They are worth the gold value and no more. For Dutch historical coins it depends on the year, and there is more variation there than most people expect.
The gold ten-guilder piece from the well-known 1875 to 1933 series is almost always simply gold value. Between two and four million were struck of 1912, 1917, 1925, 1932 and 1933 each. The genuine exceptions are 1892, of which 61 exist, and the 1895 over 1891 overstrike with 149 pieces. Coins from before 1875 are a different matter: 101 were struck in 1848, 860 in 1842 and just over 9,000 in 1829.
With the gold ducat it is the other way round. The early ducats from 1814 to 1849 are common, with mintages running into the millions. The rare ones come from the 1872 to 1885 period: 14,875 were struck in 1877, 20,103 in 1879 and 25,372 in 1880.
Not sure which year you have, or is there a mint mark you do not recognise? Send a photo of both sides and we will look it up for you. If your coin is mainly gold value, we make a direct offer on it. If it is rare, it goes to auction, because that yields more.
At Schulman b.v., we value and sell all types of gold coins, including:
